Police seized a .357 caliber Colt Trooper handgun from a man arrested in connection with an assault on his wife Wednesday night in central Fresno.

Officers went to an apartment complex in the 2100 block of North Angus Street about 6 p.m. to check on a disturbance. Sgt. Steven Jaquez said additional callers reported a man with a handgun was assaulting a woman nearby.

The officers encountered Rathana Chong, 40, who matched the description of the suspect, and detained him. Witnesses identified Chong as the suspect and pointed out where the handgun, which was not loaded, had been discarded.

Jaquez said officers are trying to find the weapon’s registered owner.
