A Cuesta College student with ties to the central San Joaquin Valley was taken into custody on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon in the stabbings of two students near Cal Poly early Friday.

Jay Hernandez, 20, turned himself in at the Tulare County Jail on Saturday. He posted a $25,000 bail and was released on bond, San Luis Obispo police said.

The stabbing occurred when a Cal Poly student and a Cuesta College student were walking along Foothill Boulevard near Mustang Village just before 1 a.m. and were allegedly accosted by two men.

One of the men – police identified him as Hernandez – allegedly stabbed the two before both suspects ran. The two victims were treated for non life-threatening injuries at a hospital.

Sgt. Chad Pfarr said that Hernandez is originally from the Valley and is living in San Luis Obispo while attending Cuesta College, which is just north of the Cal Poly campus.

Hernandez is a 2013 graduate of Hanford West High School. He played varsity basketball in the 2012-13 season on the team that won the CIF Central Section Division II title.

Police served a search warrant at Hernandez’s San Luis Obispo home Friday evening, Pfarr said. Hernandez was not at the home at the time.

Pfarr said that the department is not commenting on the second suspect. The investigation into the assault is continuing.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the San Luis Obispo Police Department at 805-781-7317 or Crime Stoppers at 805-549-STOP.
