A Fresno man was arrested Wednesday night on charges of negligent discharge of a firearm and possession of a concealed weapon, police reported.

Sgt. Steven Jaquez said the department’s Shot Spotter system alerted officers to the shots in the 3200 block of East Clay Avenue, near First and Olive avenues about 9:16 p.m. Officers went to the neighborhood and encountered two men drinking beer in front of an apartment. The men said that the gunfire came from several blocks away, but officers noticed that there was an empty holster nearby and searched the pair. One of the men, identified as Joe Rodriguez, was carrying a Glock 9 mm handgun for which he had a concealed weapons permit. Jaquez noted that such a permit is not valid if the holder is under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
