A man is in custody after a 45-minute standoff with police in Fresno on Sunday night after allegedly breaking a window with a hammer.

Officers responded around 7:30 p.m. to Dakota Avenue and 10th Street after receiving a report of a man trespassing on a property.

According to Lt. Zeb Price, a resident reported that someone was attempting to break into their home with a hammer. When officers arrived, they found the suspect in the backyard of his apartment after he had jumped a fence.

The victim’s home and the suspect’s apartment are adjacent to each other on Dakota Avenue.

Police negotiators responded to the scene and repeatedly ordered the man to surrender. He eventually dropped the hammer and was taken into custody without further incident.

Price said investigators believe the man was under the influence of drugs.

The suspect suffered injuries while breaking the window and was taken to a hospital for evaluation.

He is expected to be booked into the Fresno County Jail on a vandalism charge.

No other injuries were reported.
