A burglary investigation ended in a fatal deputy-involved shooting Friday after a suspect allegedly broke into a residence and later fought with a responding deputy in the middle of a roadway.

A homeowner who was away called 911 just after 4:30 p.m. to say someone was inside the home.

The caller reviewed surveillance footage and confirmed an intruder had entered the home.

Undersheriff Brian Esteves said a second 911 caller reported seeing a suspect walking away from the home and down the middle of Avenue 12 while carrying property believed to have come from the home.

A deputy arrived and attempted to detain the suspect on Avenue 12, a major roadway through the Ranchos area.

Esteves said a struggle broke out between the female deputy and the suspect, prompting additional 911 calls from witnesses reporting that the two were fighting in the roadway.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, witnesses told dispatchers that the suspect was able to take the deputy’s Taser during the altercation and was attempting to use it against her.

Several good Samaritans reportedly stopped and attempted to intervene as the struggle continued, Esteves said.

During the confrontation, the deputy fired her service weapon, striking the suspect.

Life-saving measures were administered, but the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.

The deputy involved in the shooting has approximately four to five years of service with the Sheriff’s Office, Esteves said. Authorities said she sustained bruises and other minor injuries during the struggle and is expected to be evaluated.

Esteves said the suspect’s identity had not yet been confirmed, and authorities could not provide information regarding the suspect’s age or criminal history.
