A woman is in serious condition Friday after she was hit by a hit-and-run vehicle in Fresno. The crash happened at 10:30 p.m. at Belmont and Chestnut avenues.

When officers arrived, they found a 40-year-old woman lying in the street suffering from severe injuries to her upper torso and head, Fresno Police Lt. Michael Pierce said.

Police said the woman was unconscious and not breathing. Officers began CPR until fire and EMS arrived on scene and took over first aid procedures.

The woman was taken to Community Regional Medical Center where she is in critical condition.

Belmont and Chestnut was closed for several hours as the Collision Reconstruction Unit investigated.
