Video: Caleb Quick’s father on delays in Clovis murder case 1 year after slaying
The father of Caleb Quick expressed his frustrations with delays in the legal system as the 18-year-old Clovis teen’s execution-style slaying approaches its anniversary.
Stephen Quick spoke to reporters Wednesday outside a Fresno courthouse, where a hearing was again continued as the defense has struggled to get an expert to testify in the murder case against Byron Rangel, who was 16 when he allegedly acted as the gunman in the April 23, 2025 slaying of Quick.
The elder Quick said prosecutors have told him the state has only a handful of experts who could testify in the transfer hearing, in which both sides present evidence and make arguments over whether Rangel should be tried as an adult.
Rangel and his alleged co-conspirator, Cassie Michael, are being tried separately, which means the expert for one case cannot testify for the other defense case. That further strains the small potential pool for defense experts.
Michael is due back in court on Monday, and her transfer hearing could be set for later in the week. Her defense attorney, Jeff Hammerschmidt, said at a previous hearing he was prepared to argue for her release if the hearing were further delayed.
Rangel is due back in court on June 9.
