  • Police arrest suspect after using other techniques; investigation and witness tips.

A man was taken into custody Sunday, accused of ramming his vehicle into a Fresno home and later arming himself with a knife.

Fresno police Lt. Henry Garcia III said officers responded shortly after 9 a.m. to the 4200 block of West Corona Avenue, near Shaw and Brawley, following reports of a disturbance involving a man.

Garcia said the man intentionally drove his vehicle into the home, causing significant structural damage. Several people were inside the home at the time, but no injuries were reported from the crash.

“When officers arrived, the male did arm himself with a knife,” Garcia said.

Police called in negotiators and spent over an hour attempting to de-escalate the situation and persuade the man to surrender. During that time, officers safely evacuated family members from the home and gathered information about the incident.

Despite negotiations, the suspect refused to comply with officers’ commands to drop the weapon.

Authorities then used “other techniques” to take him into custody.

Garcia said the man suffered self-inflicted injuries during the encounter and was taken to Community Regional Medical Center. He is expected to survive.

Police later said Sunday that the man violated a restraining order.

Police temporarily closed off the area following the incident and asked the public to avoid the scene while the investigation continued.

Police are also asking anyone who witnessed the incident or has information about the suspect to contact the police.

The damaged vehicle remained at the scene as officers continued processing evidence. An investigation into the circumstances leading up to the crash is ongoing.

Anyone with information should call the police at 559-621-7000.
