A 15-year-old is arrested Sunday morning, accused of robbing a Vons and attempting to carjack a vehicle.

Officers received a call about a robbery in progress just before 9:30 a.m. at 8949 N. Cedar Ave..

According to Fresno police Lt. Paul Cervantes, the suspect produced a gun as he was confronted by store employees, who allowed him to leave. The suspect then attempted to carjack a vehicle by tapping on the window with the gun, but the driver took off in a southbound direction and a single shot was fired.

Cervantes said it is unknown if the shot was fired at the vehicle or in the air.

A sergeant heard the gunshot while in the parking lot and quickly set up a perimeter with arriving officers after witnesses pointed out the suspect, who hopped a couple of fences into a residential area. Officers were able to find the suspect who was detained.

Officers backtracked the suspect location and recovered a gun. Officers also found ammunition in his pocket.

The teen will be booked into juvenile hall on multiple counts of robbery, attempted carjacking and assault with a deadly weapon, Cervantes said.

No injuries were reported.
