A man was taken into custody Tuesday morning after an hours-long standoff following an alleged domestic violence incident that culminated with the suspect attempting to stab an officer, police said.

The incident started around 4:45 a.m. at a home near Maple and McKinley avenues. A woman called police to say she had been in an argument with a man armed with a knife who allegedly assaulted her. The suspect, police said, had an active restraining order against him where the woman was the protected person.

Officers spent over two hours attempting to speak with man, who had armed himself with a knife, to get him to surrender, police said.

At 7:47 a.m. he exited the home and was not cooperative with officers’ commands. Officers attempted to physically restrain the man, who tried to stab one of the officers with the knife. He was taken into custody with the assistance of a police K-9.

The officer was not injured, police said.

The suspect is 28 years old and is on active parole for criminal threats, police said.

He was arrested on suspicion of felony assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer, misdemeanor domestic battery, misdemeanor violation of a domestic violation order and parole violation.
