A man is in jail after allegedly struck vehicles and led police on a slow-speed pursuit Sunday morning.

An officer was at Shields and Blackstone avenues after he came upon the aftermath of a traffic collision that just occurred and saw one of the involved vehicles driving away from the scene, Fresno police Lt. Skye Leibee said.

The officer followed the vehicle that was fleeing the scene, but it appeared to have extensive front end damage, Leibee said.

The officer provided radio updates to other responding officers and eventually attempted to stop the suspect vehicle by activating the emergency lights and siren. The driver did not stop and a slow-speed pursuit ensued.

The suspect vehicle entered the Parc Grove Commons apartment complex at Fresno and Clinton avenues and came to a stop after striking a building.

Although initially uncooperative, the driver was eventually removed and arrested, Leibee said.

A search of the vehicle revealed an unregistered, loaded handgun, and remnants of drugs. The driver was a man in his early 20s.

After being medically cleared at Community Regional Medical Center, he will be booked into Fresno County jail on several vehicle code violations and weapons related offenses, Leibee said.

The occupants of the other involved vehicle at the original collision scene were not injured, Leibee said.

The building at the apartment complex was inspected by the Fresno Fire Department and was found to be structurally safe.
