49-year-old woman killed in hit-and-run crash in Madera County, CHP says. Driver returned

A woman was killed Tuesday in a hit-and-run in Madera County.

Officers responded to the collision to the area of the 900 block of Trinity Avenue in Chowchilla for a report of a possible hit-and-run traffic accident.

The caller told dispatch they only saw a figure in the road believed to be a person or animal.

Officers arrived and saw a woman lying on the street. The driver left the scene but later returned, police said.

The victim is a 49-year-old Chowchilla resident and was pronounced dead.

The driver, identified as 21-year-old Josue Vasquez of Chowchilla, was detained after returning. He was arrested and booked into Madera County jail on several felony charges.

The investigation is ongoing, but police said it is believed that drugs, alcohol and speed was a factor.
