27-year-old man arrested after 22-hour standoff with police in Fresno, cops say
A 27-year-old man was arrested Saturday night after nearly a 24-hour standoff with officers with the Fresno Police Department.
Just before 10 p.m. Friday, police received several calls from residents inside a home on Indianapolis Avenue, near Valentine Avenue saying a family member was shooting a gun inside the home.
Fresno Police Lt. Leslie Williams said the family members were able to evacuate safely from the home. The man was left alone in the home and police heard more shots fired.
Officers remained on scene throughout the night and into Saturday hoping for a peaceful outcome. Neighbors were told to stay inside their home and shelter in place and later evacuate as the SWAT team arrived Saturday.
Negotiators were on scene and established communication with him for a short time, Williams said. Officers later lost contact.
The SWAT team was about to go in, but the man ran from the home and went eastbound on Indianapolis with a rifle in one hand and a hammer in the other, Williams said.
Officers made voice contact and gave him orders to lay on the ground. The man complied and officers took him into custody.
“This was the outcome that we were looking for,” Williams said.
No force was used by officers, Williams added.
Officers contacted the residents to make sure no one was struck by gunfire. No injuries were reported.
The standoff lasted 22 hours, Williams said.
The suspect is facing several charges.
