Another victim added in federal sexual assault case against former Sanger police officer

A new victim was added in the case against a former Sanger police officer who was charged in 2022 with sexually assaulting multiple women while on duty.

According to a release from the U.S. Justice Department on Thursday, a federal grand jury returned a superseding indictment charging J. DeShawn Torrence with an additional count of deprivation of constitutional rights under color of law. He is alleged to have sexually assaulted the victim after locking her in his patrol car and driving her to an isolated location.

Torrence, 40, of Corcoran, was initially indicted in August 2022 on charges of assaulting four women from August 2017 to June 2021.

The original indictment charged that the officer engaged “in various forms of nonconsensual sexual conduct, ranging from directing a victim to remove her clothing without a legitimate law enforcement purpose, to forcing his victims to engage in sex acts.”

Several of the counts carry a maximum sentence of life in prison and a $250,000 fine, the Justice Department said.
