Man accused of gas station killing in Fresno arrested using search warrant, police say
Officers arrested the accused shooter of a Fresno man killed after the two parties had a confrontation near a gas station, police said Thursday.
Officers arrested Damien Murphy, 29, on Wednesday after serving search warrants at a home on Cedar Avenue south of Shaw Avenue, police said in an update.
Murphy’s family had a previous run-in with 39-year-old William Carney before the deadly interaction about 10:30 p.m. Oct. 16 at a gas station near Belmont Avenue and Abby Street, investigators said.
Police did not detail the previous confrontation between the victim and Murphy’s family.
Gunfire notification software, called ShotSpotter, alerted police to three rounds at the gas station, police said.
Officers arrived to find Carney withering from at least one wound to his upper body, police said. Investigators said they believed he was shot south of the gas station and made his way there before collapsing.
Carney was rushed to Community Regional Medical Center and into surgery, but succumbed to the violence, police said.
Murphy was held in Fresno County Jail without bail on Thursday, records show.
The fatal shooting marked 26 intentional homicides through Oct. 16 in Fresno. A couple of previously reported homicides have been designated differently, according to police.
There were 49 through Oct. 17 last year, according to archives.
