Fresno firefighters duel river bluff-area fires and a possible arson suspect is detained

A person of interest was detained Saturday afternoon after multiple fires erupted below the San Joaquin River bluffs in northwest Fresno, the Fresno Fire Department reported.

Spokesman Joshua Sellers said that shortly after noon, the department received multiple 911 calls about a fire west of Nees and Palm avenues. Arriving firefighters immediately began to fight a blaze about the size of a football field.

The fire spread to three other smaller blazes. Eleven fire rigs arrived and brought the fires under control.

Sellers said a person of interest was being detained as a possible arson suspect..
