Fresno police seized a loaded handgun from a man who said that he needed the weapon to protect himself from gang members Monday night in southeast Fresno.

Officer Nicholas El-Helou said police met the man after a traffic stop in the area of Chestnut Avenue and Highway 180. The driver of the car did not have a license and the vehicle was searched before it was impounded. Officers found a bag containing a loaded .357 magnum revolver.

Passenger Joseph Lumbert, 25, of Fowler said that he needed the gun for protection after he was fired on last week in southeast Fresno. El-Helou said Lumbert was arrested on charges of possession of a concealed weapon.
