Accused of rape and sodomy, Fresno County corrections officer arrested near Madera

A Fresno County Jail correctional officer accused of rape and sodomy this week was arrested and made an appearance in court Thursday in Madera County, according to prosecutors.

Jeremy Gerard Cuthbert, 36, of Oakhurst was booked into Madera County Jail on Wednesday after being accused of carrying out the sex crimes while the victim was under the influence of an intoxicating substance that affected their ability to resist, court records show.

Many details on the incident were not immediately available, but he’s accused of rape, sodomy and using another object on Feb. 15 against the victim, who was described only as a person who was not his spouse.

Cuthbert is employed at the Fresno County Jail, sheriff’s spokesperson Tony Botti confirmed Thursday. He has been placed on leave and is a subject of an internal affairs investigation, Botti said.

Cuthbert was hired in Fresno County in 2019, Botti confirmed.

He appeared in Madera County Superior Court on Thursday, but did not enter a plea. His arraignment was pushed to July 3, the Madera County District Attorney’s Office confirmed.

It was not immediately clear if Cuthbert had an attorney.
