Officer chases vehicle following shooting in Fresno. Suspect crashes at an intersection
Five people were taken to a hospital Thursday night following a shooting, a pursuit and a crash in east-central Fresno.
Fresno Police Lt. Israel Reyes said an officer was in the area of Fresno and Tyler avenues doing an enforcement when he saw a white vehicle parked in the 2400 block of East Tyler Avenue with its doors open. The officer went around to the southern end of the street to get behind the vehicle when he heard shots fired.
As the officer attempted to stop the vehicle, one person from the vehicle ran off. The vehicle continued to Olive Avenue and Fresno Street, heading east on Olive at a high rate of speed.
“Our officers continued their pursuit, being that the vehicle was possibly involved in the shooting in the area,” Reyes said.
The vehicle failed to yield at the red light at Peach Avenue and Olive and struck a vehicle that was traveling south on Peach.
The fleeing vehicle struck the victim’s vehicle on the passenger side. She was taken to a local hospital with moderate injuries and was expected to survive.
The occupants in the suspect vehicle were taken to the hospital with moderate injuries and “possibly” a broken arm.
Officers located a gun inside the vehicle, and Reyes said officers believe the suspects were involved in the Tyler shooting.
Three men and a women were inside the white vehicle, Reyes said.
Two houses were struck by gunfire on Tyler. Multiple shell casings were found in the roadway, Reyes said.
No injuries were reported there.
“It could have easily been a tragedy over there by the amount of gunfire that was discharged,” Reyes said.
