More than 100 cars at Fresno sideshow, police say. Arrests, tickets, impounds follow

Fresno law enforcement cited more than 168 people and impounded dozens of cars after breaking up multiple sideshows late Sunday.

Police did not disclose all of the locations where the reckless driving occurred, but in perhaps the largest single event on Sunday more than 100 cars blocked the intersection of Dan Ronquillo Drive and Roeding Drive, according to police. That location is an industrial area just northwest of the Highway 180/99 interchange.

Fresno Police Traffic Unit and California Highway Patrol broke that sideshow up about 10 p.m., Sgt. Diana Trueba Vega said.

At least 36 vehicles were impounded for 30 days from that sideshow and the drivers were issued citations for reckless driving and aiding and abetting, police said.

Officers patrolled other known hotspots for sideshows and towed 60 vehicles, arrested eight DUI drivers, issued 50 tickets related to reckless driving and made one felony arrest for evading, police said.

Other intersections where sideshows took over included: Blackstone and Nees avenues in front of River Park, from where a CHP plane followed a reckless driver (who was later caught by ground units and arrested); four in southeast Fresno and the surrounding area —Peach and Olive avenues, Jensen and Willow avenues, Chestnut and North avenues and, around 1 a.m. Monday, Clinton and Temperance avenues) and Elm and Lincoln avenues in Easton, where drivers descended just before 10 p.m. despite a power outage in the area that left the intersection dark. The sideshow didn’t stay long there, quickly rousted by law enforcement with lights and sirens and joining a long procession headed west apparently to the Ronquillo/Roeding meetup. In their wake, the gaggle of cars left pieces of bodywork and shredded tires.
