Update: Suspect in car dealership stabbing was unhoused, police say. Victim was in a meeting

A man was in critical condition on Wednesday after being stabbed inside a Fresno car dealership, police said.

A man, who police said Thursday was 36 years old, entered the Ford dealership near Blackstone Avenue between Auto Center Drive and Bullard Avenue about 8:30 a.m. and stabbed another man several times in the back, officer Felipe Uribe said.

The victim, who was 56, was taken to Community Regional Medical Center and was in critical condition, Uribe said. Police said in a Thursday update, the victim’s condition was critical but stable.

Police arrested the alleged attacker, who fled toward Highway 41. An officer on the highway detained him after he surrendered, police said Thursday.

The victim was inside the dealership and meeting with other employees when he was attacked, police said Thursday.

“At this time, we don’t know if it’s a workplace incident,” Uribe said Wednesday. “We don’t know the kind of relationship they had, because we haven’t been able to talk to the victim.”

Police said Thursday after speaking to both men, the attacker and the victim did not know each other. Police recovered a knife they believe was used.

The man arrested was part of Fresno’s unhoused community, police said in the Thursday update.

He’s held at Fresno County Jail in lieu of $625,000 in bail, according to jail records.
