One dead, five hurt in suspected DUI crash in Fresno County. What CHP learned at scene

The California Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal collision Saturday night near Kerman that may have been caused by a DUI driver.

Five others, including the driver suspected of being under the influence, were hurt and rushed to Community Regional Medical Center in Fresno.

The crash occurred about 9:18 p.m at Highway 180 and Shasta Avenue and involved a 2003 Honda and a 2017 Acura. The roadway was closed until 2 a.m. as investigators scoured the scene for evidence.

Antonio Orosco, 27, of Fresno was arrested on suspicion of drug impairment and vehicular manslaughter at the hospital, the CHP said.

A 20-year-old Mendota woman driving the Acura was killed. She was in the Acura with four passengers — two of them age 21 and the others 20 and 14. All are from Mendota.

The CHP reported that Orosco was driving west on 180, east of Shasta, as the Acura headed east. The Honda veered into the oncoming lane, directly into the path of the Acura, and the two vehicles collided.

The driver of the Acura died at the scene and three passengers suffered major injuries. Injuries to the fourth were described as moderate.
