Driver is shot and killed in central Fresno. The car crashed and left a woman hurt
A man was shot and killed while driving early Saturday in central Fresno, with a passenger also injured after the car crashed into a parked vehicle
The shooting happened at 3:20 a.m. at North Maroa and East Clinton avenues.
Multiple shots were picked up by the Fresno Police Department’s ShotSpotter electronic detection system, Lt. Larry Bowlan said. Officers were told a vehicle had crashed after the gunfire.
The dark-colored vehicle was struck multiple times while going east on Clinton, Bowlan said, then crashed into the parked vehicle on the north side of the street, east of Maroa.
The man in his 40s was struck once and pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger, described as being in her 20s, wasn’t shot, but she did suffer minor to moderate injuries in the crash.
She was taken to Community Regional Medical Center and listed in stable condition. The relationship between the two people was not known.
The man’s death is the 36th homicide of the year in the city of Fresno. There had been 42 at this point in 2021.
Multiple shell casings were found in the intersection, Bowlan said. It is unknown if the shots came from a passing vehicle or somebody walking down the street or on a bicycle.
“We have not had anybody report to us yet that they were traveling east or westbound and may have been struck by gunfire or errant rounds,” Bowlan said.
Detectives are canvassing for surveillance video and trying to find any witnesses, all of which may help determine what led up to the shooting.
