12-year-old survived Fresno birthday party shooting but is in critical condition, police say
Many questions remained to be answered Monday following a teen’s party where a 12-year-old was shot multiple times, Fresno police said in an update.
The boy has survived his injuries but was in critical condition at Community Regional Medical Center, according to Lt. Bill Dooley.
That shooting capped off about six hours where a handful of separate incidents of gun violence were reported.
“None of these were related. This is not something that typically happens, or at least hasn’t happened for some time,” Dooley said. “It kept all of us extremely busy.”
Officers responded to a shots fired call with the 12-year-old victim along Knoll Avenue north of Clinton Avenue just before 11 p.m. Sunday and found the boy, who was attending the party of a 15-year-old, police said.
The boy appeared to be at the party without his parents and, Dooley said, it was not immediately clear if other adults were in attendance.
It’s too early to say whether the shooting was gang related, he said, and it’s unclear if the boy was the intended target.
Police at the scene Sunday said the shooting followed some kind of altercation. Dooley said the victim’s family and neighbors near the scene of the shooting were cooperating.
Dooley said because the party had so many young people, police believe someone likely caught some part of the incident on video. He appealed to party-goers to come forward if they had video.
If anyone witnessed the shooting, the police department asks them to call 559-621-7000 or call CrimeStoppers at 559-498-STOP.
Others were shot in unrelated gun violence the same night.
A 33-year-old man was shot on Mono Street in southwest Fresno around 11:30 p.m. Two suspects were captured on video shooting at the victim with handguns in an alley between A and B streets.
He was transported to Community Regional Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.
There also was a walk-in gunshot victim at hospital after midnight.
Through Saturday, Fresno had seen 264 shootings, Dooley said, compared to 370 the same time last year.
