Man killed in hit-and-run. Witnesses give Fresno police detailed description of truck

A man was killed in a hit-and-run late Saturday night in southeast Fresno, police said.

It happened just before midnight on Belmont Avenue near First Street.

Officers found the man, who police said appeared to be in his 50s, lying on the eastbound lanes of Belmont, Lt. Sean Biggs said.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

A few witnesses told officers that the vehicle was a white Chevrolet pickup, newer model with black rims and tinted windows and appeared to be slightly lowered, Biggs said.

Witnesses said the vehicle went to a turn pocket on North Fisher Street and made a U-turn and was seen fleeing north on Second Street.

Biggs said the man was crossing the roadway from the south side of the street to the north side when he was struck in the No. 1 lane.

“Based on the impact and everything, it was probable damage to the front end” of the truck, Biggs said.

It was the second fatal vehicle versus pedestrian crash in Fresno in three days. Raquel Sigarroa, 50, of Fresno was struck and killed by a truck Thursday morning in central Fresno.

The deaths come the same week Fresno was identified as the 10th-most dangerous city in the United States for pedestrians, according to a new report released Tuesday.

Anyone with information on the fatal collision Saturday night is asked to call police at 559-621-7000.
