Man with major injuries after car-to-car shooting on Highway 99 in Fresno, CHP says
Highway 99 in Fresno was shut down by law enforcement on Sunday evening after a car-to-car shooting left one man with life-threatening injuries at Community Regional Medical Center.
Southbound 99 was closed at Olive Avenue while California Highway Patrol officers investigated the incident, which was reported around 5:30 p.m. after a car came to a stop on the highway about 40 yards past the Olive exit.
“Initially, it was called in ... as a potential traffic accident,” CHP Sgt. Bryan Hunt said. “Once officers went on scene, it was discovered it was not an accident — it was actually a freeway shooting that had occurred with one victim that had been shot.”
The victim was driving a Honda Accord, which came to a stop in the right-hand lane just past the Olive Avenue exit. He was hit by multiple rounds, and CHP investigators found a number of shell casings on the highway. The driver was the only occupant of the vehicle.
The suspect vehicle is a Chevy Tahoe, brown or greenish in color, Hunt said.
Traffic was diverted off the highway at Olive and then immediately back onto the highway, but the 99 was shut down for several hours.
There are cameras around the area, which CHP investigators are checking.
“Unfortunately, where the scene is, is kind of in a depression so at this point I don’t know how well the cameras would pick this area up,” Hunt said. “But we’re definitely looking into that.”
The victim remained in critical condition Monday afternoon.
