Police make arrest in killing of Sanger teenager in February using video surveillance

A 40-year-old Sanger man has been arrested in the shooting death of 18-year-old Steven Roman Montoya-Lopez in February.

Montoya-Lopez was walking in the 1200 block of Sanger Avenue on Feb. 25 when a passing car opened fire. According to police in an update Monday, he was able to run home where his family called 911.

He was then taken to Community Regional Medical Center, where he later died.

Police identified the suspect in the killing as Gilberto Emilio Gonzalez, an active gang member with “an extensive criminal history.” He was one of two suspects identified after police found the suspect car using video surveillance.

Gonzalez is the one police believe pulled the trigger.

The Sanger police department and U.S. Marshals Fugitive Apprehension Team arrested Gonzalez on Friday while serving a search warrant on a home in Reedley.

He was booked into Fresno County Jail and is being held on more than $2 million dollars in bail, police said.
