‘It could’ve been a disaster.’ Seven children taken to hospital after a crash in Fresno
A two-vehicle crash Saturday afternoon in northeast Fresno sent seven children to the hospital, with authorities suspecting one of those involved with driving under the influence.
The crash happened at 2:15 p.m. near East Ashlan and North Cedar avenues when a vehicle was trying to enter a shopping center but was struck by another vehicle at a high rate of speed, Fresno Police Lt. Steven Card said.
A van was turning left when a driver in a truck struck the van on the passenger side. The truck’s passengers included two children — a 7-year-old and a 10-year-old boy. The van carried five children, ranging from a 10-month to a 9-year-old.
All the children were taken to the hospital. One had a broken leg, Card said.
The driver of the truck was arrested on suspicion of DUI. Freddie Guerrero, 30, is facing several charges, including child endangerment. Card said.
It is unknown if the driver of the van was taken to the hospital.
“It’s really unfortunate that it happened, No. 1,” Card said. “We’re really fortunate that nobody was badly injured. It could’ve been a disaster.”
