Fresno Police officer injured in crash. The suspect had a prior DUI conviction

A Fresno Police officer was injured Thursday evening after he was rear-ended in northwest Fresno by a driver with a history of driving under the influence.

The collision happened at 8:47 p.m. at North El Capitan and West Shaw avenues.

Fresno Police Lt. Paul Cervantes said the officer was blocking the No. 3 lane in the westbound direction on West Shaw for a large pothole that had caused “several flat tires.”

The officer was waiting for city workers to fill the pothole when a driver traveling in the westbound direction rear-ended the officer, who was seated in the vehicle.

The officer sustained moderate injuries and was taken to a hospital for a complaint of pain and a slight limp.

It was unclear if alcohol or drugs played a factor in Thursday’s collision.

But Cervantes said the driver, who was identified as 32-year-old Valentin Uribe, had a prior DUI conviction in May and was also driving on a suspended driver’s license.
