A man was killed and a burned car dumped in Fresno area. Now officers are asking for help

Officers are asking for the public’s help in solving the killing of a man who was shot to death Friday in the Fresno area.

A burned car believed to be involved in the homicide was later dumped southeast of Fresno and Fresno County Sheriff’s Office homicide investigators are asking people at homes and businesses to check security camera footage.

The victim was identified Saturday as Javier Fernandez, 52, of Malaga.

He was shot in front of a home shortly before 9:30 a.m. in the 3000 block of East Olney Avenue in Malaga, according to the sheriff’s office.

Deputies arrived and found Fernandez lying in the street with multiple gunshot wounds. He was taken to Community Regional Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead.

According to investigators, Fernandez was sitting in a car on the street when he was shot.

Detectives identified the suspect vehicle as a silver 1997 Honda CRV, stolen from a business near Chestnut and Jensen avenues that morning.

Around 1 p.m., officers found a matching vehicle burned near Jensen and Cedar avenues in Calwa, a few miles north of the original crime scene.

Detectives are asking people in the Malaga and Calwa areas to review surveillance camera footage for the vehicle between 7:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.
