Homicides continue to climb in Fresno after slaying at family gathering, police say

The Fresno Police Department is investigating the city’s latest homicide of 2020.

The shooting happened just before 10 p.m. Monday near the 4600 block of East Washington Avenue following a family disturbance.

Officers arrived and found a 41-year-old man, identified as Fernando Gonzales of Fresno, with a wound to his upper body.

He was transported to Community Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Homicide Investigators believe he was shot during a disturbance that broke out at a family function. Police said the suspect or suspects left the scene in at least one unidentified vehicle.

Monday’s killing comes after a 23-year-old man was shot inside a truck he was driving in west central Fresno early Monday morning. He was identified as Triston Turpin of Fresno.

Lt. Larry Bowlan said there have been 499 shootings this year compared to 258 in 2019 in the same time period, and 38 homicides in 2020 after 32 in 2019.

There were 45 willful homicides in 2019, according to monthly crime reports posted by the city of Fresno.

Totals since 2010 have ranged from a low of 32 in 2018 to a high of 56 in 2017.
