Fresno police are investigating a shooting that left a man in critical condition in front of a southeast Fresno high school.

According to Lt. Stephen Viveros, officers received a ShotSpotter alert just before 2 p.m. Friday in the area of Peach Avenue and Kings Canyon Road near Sunnyside High.

Officers found a man lying on the sidewalk in front of the school with a gunshot wound to his upper torso. The victim was taken to Community Regional Medical Center, where he was listed in critical condition.

Viveros said witnesses told officers that the victim and a suspect were seen arguing in front of a business across the street from where the shooting took place. Both men were seen pulling out handguns during the argument.

The witnesses said that the victim was running toward the high school as he was chased by the suspect. The victim was struck by a bullet in a business parking lot.

The suspect was last seen fleeing the scene in a white, four-door vehicle headed east on Kings Canyon.

Viveros said it was unclear if the shooting was gang-related.

Peach Avenue at Kings Canyon was closed during the investigation.
