One slain, one wounded near Fresno homeless encampment in east-central Fresno

Two people were shot, one fatally, early Tuesday near a homeless encampment in east-central Fresno, police reported.

Sgt. Paul Cervantes said multiple gunshots were reported shortly before 6 a.m. at the intersection of East Tyler Avenue and North Ninth Street.

The victim who was killed was identified Wednesday by the Fresno County Coroner’s Office as 36-year-old Toma Chhun of Fresno.

Tyler Avenue is the nearest east-west street running parallel to Highway 180 north of the route, and there is a large homeless encampment on state property. Cervantes said police were investigating whether the victim or victims lived in the encampment.

Fresno police Sgt. Jeff La Blue said neither shooting victim was believed to be homeless.

One of the shooting victims was reported to be in critical condition at Community Regional Medical Center.

Detectives were canvassing the area for witnesses and video surveillance.
