Partygoers heard gunshots in southeast Fresno. Then they found a family member dead

A 31-year-old man was shot and killed early Saturday morning in southeast Fresno, police said.

Police arrived around 1:15 a.m. at East Calwa Avenue and South Tenth Street and found the man laying face down on the street with multiple gunshot wounds to his upper body, Fresno Police Lt. Anthony DeWall said.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene. He was identified as 31-year-old Joseph Lara of Fresno.

Police said the man was at a party with family members and left. After the man left the party, family members heard gunshots and ran to the street and found him.

“The victim’s relatives have no idea why he left the party,” DeWall said. “He didn’t seem distraught like if he got a phone call or anything like that. They realized at some point that he had left and that’s when they heard the gunshots and found him.”

Police are looking for surveillance camera footage and witnesses to the shooting. Police don’t have any suspect description or know where the shots came from.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 559-498-7867.
