The estranged husband of a mother shot and killed in a possible domestic disturbance Tuesday afternoon at a Madera health clinic is in custody, police reported Wednesday morning.

He was identified as Julio Garay.

Police responded to a report of shots fired around 2:30 p.m. to the Camarena Health Clinic, located at the 500 block of E. Almond Ave.

Police said the suspect walked up to the vehicle and shot the woman while she was outside of her car while her kids were inside.

As bullets were fired, the mother flung her body to shield her children from getting shot, police said.

The woman was transported to a hospital, where she died. The children were not hurt.

Garay has a lengthy criminal history, according to police. He recently bailed out of jail on a domestic violence charge in connection with an incident in Chowchilla that involved the same victim.
