Man killed in Fresno drive-by shooting while waiting for his vehicle to be repaired

A man was killed in an apparently random drive-by shooting Wednesday evening outside of a central Fresno tire shop, police said.

Police received a 911 call and the electronic ShotSpotter system alerted six rounds fired around 6:45 p.m. at North Effie Street and East Belmont Avenue, near Abby and Blackstone avenues.

When police arrived, they found the victim with multiple gunshot wounds to his upper torso at Toltecas Tire Shop at 474 N. Effie St.

The man was taken to Community Regional Medical Center, where he died. Police on Thursday identified him as Cristian Garcia, 21, of Fresno.

Lt. Tim Tietjen said on Wednesday night said Garcia was in front of the shop asking for help with his broken-down vehicle that was “not too far away.”

Tietjen said a gray or green SUV made a turn to go southbound on Effie. As the suspects made the turn, they fired at Garcia.

The vehicle left southbound Effie, Tietjen said.

While the investigation was continuing Wednesday night, police believe the shooting is a random act, Tietjen said.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call police at 559-621-7000.
