Hit-and-run driver knocks out power to more than 2,000 customers in Fresno, police say

Update: PG&E said power will be restored by 5 a.m. Wednesday.

More than 2,000 customers were without power Tuesday evening following a hit-and-run in central Fresno, police said.

The driver hit a power pole and sheared it at Dakota and Maroa avenues around 6 p.m.

Witnesses said the driver kept driving slowly until he came to a stop in a residential neighborhood before he ran off, police said.

The collision knocked out power to 2,864 customers, Pacific Gas and Electric Co. spokesman Denny Boyles said.

Street signals were also out in the area, stretching to East Olive Avenue in the Tower District.

Power has been restored to 2,300 customers, Boyles said.

PG&E crews remain on site and power is expected to be fully restored at 10 p.m.
