Fresno police break down door, disarm knife-wielding man allegedly threatening his family

Fresno police broke down a door and disarmed a knife-wielding man who was reportedly attacking family members inside a home Tuesday afternoon.

No one was injured in the incident, which took place in southeast Fresno near Backer and Inyo avenues, northeast of the Fresno Fairgrounds.

Sgt. Paul Cervantes said police received a call for help at the home about 1:30 p.m., and an officer arrived about a minute later. Outside the home, the officer was told by neighbors that family members were being stabbed. The officer breached the door, confronted the man at the doorway and convinced him to drop the weapon.

Cervantes said mental health workers arrived at the scene and determined that the man needed to go to the hospital for an evaluation. Cervantes said officers showed great restraint in dealing with the armed, distraught man.
