Driver allegedly under the influence crashes and kills a man in NE Fresno, police say
A 19-year-old man was killed and an alleged DUI driver was arrested after a crash Saturday in northeast Fresno, police said.
The victim was identified Sunday by the Fresno County Coroner’s Office as Carson Gates of Fresno.
Fresno police said the crash happened around 3 p.m. at Nees and Chestnut avenues.
Lt. Anthony Dewall said Gates was a passenger in a red car that was struck by a white pickup. Gates was taken to Saint Agnes Medical Center, where he died. The driver of the red car suffered non-life threatening injuries.
The driver of the pickup, James Mitchell Anderson, 26, was not hurt in the crash. He was arrested and booked into Fresno County Jail for charges of vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and driving under the influence.
Witnesses told police that the red car was westbound on Nees and preparing to make a left onto Chestnut when the pickup that was traveling north on Chestnut struck the car.
Police said they are not sure if one of the drivers ran a red light, but the investigation is ongoing.
“This is an unfortunate incident that is completely avoidable,” Dewall said. “We just want to stress to everybody driving under the influence of anything is not worth it.”
