Fresno police: Teens flee after shooting recycling center worker in attempted robbery

Two teenage suspects ran away after an attempted robbery Monday afternoon at a Fresno recycling center, where one worker was shot with a shotgun.

The worker shot, a man in his mid 40s, was taken to an area hospital, where he was listed in stable condition, Fresno police Sgt. Jeff La Blue said.

The attempted armed robbery occurred around 1:45 p.m. in a recycling center parking lot on Chestnut Avenue just north of Olive Avenue in east-central Fresno.

The unknown suspects are described as Hispanic males wearing black hoodie sweatshirts – one between the age of 14 and 16, and the other between the age of 17 and 19.

One of the suspects allegedly pointed a shotgun at the head of one of the recycling center workers, demanding money. Before any money was exchanged, another worker tried to disarm the teen with the gun. During that struggle, shots were fired from the shotgun that ricocheted off cement and hit one of the workers, who was struck at least in one of his legs, La Blue said.

The teens then ran from the center, and are believed to have been picked up by a vehicle, which sped out of the area.

Detectives were searching the area Monday afternoon and working to collect video surveillance footage from nearby homes and businesses.
