Man left dead on county roadway, woman killed in head-on crash. CHP investigating Valley crashes
The California Highway Patrol is investigating two separate crashes that left two dead in the South Valley in recent days.
A 55-year-old man was struck and killed by an unknown driver as he walked Sunday night in Tulare County, the CHP reported Monday morning.
The man, Jesus Meza, was found lying on the street unresponsive in the community of Orosi around 8:30 p.m. The CHP responded to the area after a report of a man on the roadway.
Officers believe a vehicle struck Meza and left him dead on the roadway. The driver apparently fled south on Road 124. The crash happened just south of Risley Avenue. Anyone with information is asked to call the Visalia area CHP office, 559-734-6767.
Alleged DUI
In a separate case, the CHP is investigating an alleged drunken driving crash that left a woman dead on Friday southwest of Tulare.
According to the CHP, Oscar Almeida, 27, of Corcoran crashed head-on with a 2012 Chevrolet carrying a Tulare couple.
Investigators said Almeida’s car, a 2003 Honda, crossed onto the path of the Chevrolet just before 6 p.m., killing the 62-year-old woman in the crash. She was not identified by CHP. Almeida was westbound on Avenue 184 just east of Road 64 while the couple was eastbound.
Almeida was arrested following the crash on suspicion of driving under the influence. He was initially transported to Kaweah Delta Medical Center for evaluation.
