A man was arrested for allegedly stealing a chainsaw from an Oakhurst hardware store, the Madera County Sheriff’s Office announced Monday in what it described as a “months-long commercial burglary investigation.”

The arrested: Daniel Anthony Cruz, 34, from Madera, who was identified via surveillance footage.

Cruz allegedly stole a 36-inch Stihl chainsaw worth more than $1,300 from Bryant’s True Value in Oakhurst during business hours Oct. 9.

Authorities with the sheriff’s office said Cruz was able to “evade detention” for several months until Fresno police arrested him Feb. 6 during a routine traffic stop.

He was booked into Madera County Jail, where he remained Monday afternoon, on charges of commercial burglary, grand theft, possession of burglary tools, evading a police officer and violating probation, officials said.
