Little girl struck by bullet after approximately 19 rounds fired outside Fresno apartment

A little girl who was playing outside was struck by a bullet after approximately 19 rounds were fired Saturday night in central Fresno, according to police.

The incident happened around 6:30 p.m. outside an apartment complex on Tyler Avenue at Clark Street in a neighborhood just north of Highway 180 and west of Highway 41.

Lt. Bill Dooley said a 6-year-old girl who was playing with another child near the front of the apartment complex was struck in the shoulder.

She suffered a minor injury and was in stable condition at Community Regional Medical Central where she was taken with her mother.

“The last I heard, she’s doing fine,” Dooley said. “She’s communicating and in good spirits.”

Police, meanwhile, were searching for her shooter and trying to determine why gunshots were fired. Investigators at the scene hadn’t contacted any witnesses who were willing to provide information.

Dooley said an argument occurred in front of the apartment complex just before the shots were fired. Bullets struck two vehicles and the apartment complex. Shell casings could be seen on the road.

“We believe it was some sort of disturbance that was taking place out in the middle of the street,” Dooley said. “We do not believe the 6-year-old, her family or the apartment itself was the intended target.”
