A 22-year-old man was listed in critical condition at a Fresno hospital after his car was shot at Sunday morning in a drive-by shooting on Highway 41.

The man and the car were struck by gunfire multiple times on southbound Highway 41 just south of Shields Avenue, according to California highway Patrol spokesman Mike Salas.

The vehicle had been pulled to the right shoulder and was empty as officers arrived to discover evidence of a shooting.

Police were alerted to the shooting around 2:30 a.m. by the Shot Spotter system.

CHP officers who arrived then learned an unknown driver took the man to Community Regional Medical Center with multiple gunshots.

Salas said it appeared the driver of the car was the only person hit. Investigators are following up on leads of possible suspects.

A portion of the highway was closed for hours as investigators canvassed the area for evidence.

Anyone with information is asked to call 559-262-0400.
