Knife attack in southwest Fresno ends up with several shots fired, police say
Two people were attacked with a knife Thursday at a shopping area in southwest Fresno before the attacker got shot at several times Thursday evening, according to Fresno police.
Muhammad Faheem, 35, faces five counts of assault with a deadly weapon following two separate incidents near the Kearney Center market off Fresno Avenue and A Street.
Police described how the chaotic scene unfolded:
Faheem came at a man with a knife outside of the 98 Cents & More store.
Then Faheem entered the store, got into an argument with a group of females and lunged his knife at one of the four women.
That’s when another woman in the group pulled out a gun and shot at Faheem multiple times while following him out of the store.
Police said Faheen was not hit by any bullets but he did receive a laceration to his left hand.
Neither the man who was attacked outside the store nor the woman who was attacked inside were injured, police said.
As an officer arrived at the scene, the group of women sped out of the parking lot in a car, Lt. Bill Dooley said. They were pulled over downtown at Tulare and E streets and were cooperating with the investigation.
Dooley said Thursday it was too soon to tell if the shooting was an act of self-defense.
Faheem left the scene by foot but returned and turned himself into police.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the Fresno Police Department at 559-621-7000.
