A 46-year-old was in critical condition early Friday afternoon after he was stabbed in the head and his throat was slit in southwest Fresno.

Police spokesman Lt. Joe Gomez said the victim, who was not identified, was in surgery shortly before 3 p.m. at Community Regional Medical Center in Fresno.

The man was found injured in a truck on 2100 block of South Eunice Avenue around 1:30 p.m.

Police arrested Artis Lane, 23, in a nearby residence on suspicion of robbery and assault with a deadly weapon.

Gomez said Lane initially refused to come out of the home, and that he tried to escape out the back door. Lane remained locked inside the home until his parents arrived and unlocked the door for police.

Gomez said Lane was seen walking back and forth past the victim’s home and at one point, went inside his unlocked vehicle and stole cigarettes. Shortly after, Lane allegedly returned and stole a purse from the same vehicle. Gomez said the victim then confronted Lane about the thefts and Lane slashed the 46-year-old’s throat with a knife and plunged the blade into the side of the victim’s head.
