Madera deputy shot responding to domestic violence case. Suspect arrested after standoff

A Madera County sheriff’s sergeant was shot in the leg Sunday night while responding to a domestic violence call, the sheriff’s office reported.

Sgt. Mike Pace, described by the sheriff’s office as a 28-year veteran of the department, was taken to a hospital, where he was treated and released.

The suspect was taken into custody by a SWAT team after about a three-hour standoff. The sheriff’s office said Luis Alberto Maravilla, 39, of Madera was booked on felony charges including first-degree attempted murder of a peace officer and domestic battery.

The shooting occurred about 9 p.m. in the 28000 block of Avenue 15 3/4, south of Highway 145 and just east of Madera city limits, where the sergeant went after it was reported the suspect was armed with a firearm.
