Police are investigating a possible hate crime at Temple Beth Israel after an act of vandalism took place earlier this week at the synagogue in northwest Fresno.

Capt. Burke Farrah said the word “Israel” was taken down from the wall in front of the complex sometime between 10 p.m. Tuesday, when there was an event at the synagogue, and 7 a.m. Wednesday morning.

Farrah said he had been at the event in the 6600 block of North Maroa Avenue and that he helped close up the facility with Rabbi Rick Winer.

Winer late Wednesday commented on the incident on the synagogue’s Facebook page:

“I was saddened to learn today that someone decided to vandalize our property in order to express their hatred toward the Jewish community here in Fresno.

“This afternoon, we discovered that the word ‘Israel’ was torn off our entrance wall outside the gates. While we cannot be sure of when it occurred, we believe it took place last night after we had all left the powerful and positive community wide gathering. The police promptly responded and are investigating. They are labeling it a hate crime and will keep us informed of their progress. It does not appear that anyone intending harm entered our campus.

“We heard so many messages of love and support last night for us and all those subjected to baseless hatred. We will continue to partner with our friends and neighbors in our community to bring people together in support and love. “

Farrah said that information about the type of security in place at the synagogue was not being disclosed. There are no suspects in custody. He also said anyone with information about suspects should call Crime Stoppers at 559-498-7867.
