Suspect in weekend hit-and-run surrenders to Fresno police, officers say
A driver suspected of striking a pedestrian Saturday in a hit-and run-collision on Ventura Avenue has turned himself in, according to police.
Fresno police on Monday night confirmed that Eduardo Delatorre, 30, of Fresno was in custody at Fresno County Jail in connection with the incident.
Records show Delatorre is being held on suspicion of a single felony count of hit-and-run.
Police on Tuesday said Delatorre does not have a license.
“Detectives used area video cameras and photographs from a concerned citizen to identify the vehicle and suspect involved,” police said in a news release. “Delatorre was eventually contacted by telephone and agreed to turn himself in for the crime.”
The police department released a grainy surveillance photo Monday showing a white SUV that was allegedly driven by Delatorre when a 54-year-old man was struck in the eastbound lanes of Ventura Avenue. The collision happened just before 2 p.m. Saturday as the victim tried to cross the street. He was not in a crosswalk, authorities have said.
The man suffered significant injuries to his head and body and was taken to Community Regional Medical Center, where he had undergone surgery, authorities said.
An update on his condition has not been released.
Delatorre was booked into the jail around 5:30 p.m. Monday, according to jail records.
The Collision Reconstruction Unit is expected to release more information about the case on Tuesday.
