A 23-year-old man was fatally shot early Monday in Parlier.

Parlier police responded shortly after midnight to a report of shots fired at the Bella Vista Apartments where they found Felix Ybarra-Rodriguez with a gunshot wound, according to Fresno County Sheriff’s spokesman Tony Botti.

Ybarra-Rodriguez was taken to Community Regional Medical Center in Fresno, where he later died.

According to detectives, Ybarra-Rodriguez and friends gathered at a friend’s apartment Sunday evening. Ybarra-Rodriguez and another man were outside on the patio when a man got out of a car and approached them. The men exchanged words and then the suspect pointed a gun at the two men and fired multiple shots. Ybarra-Rodriguez was the only person shot. Botti said Parlier police turned the case over to sheriff’s detectives after it became a homicide.

A motive for the shooting has not been determined and detectives are looking at the possibility it might be gang-related, Botti said. The investigation is ongoing.

Anyone with information on the suspect is asked to call the sheriff’s office at 559-600-3111, Detective Carl Chalmers at 559-600-8207 or Crime Stoppers at 559-498-7867.
